Description
This wildlife photo of a Wild Gopher Tortoise was taken after it moved into my front yard in Kissimmee, Florida. Wildlife is highly adaptable and can also live in urban environments to a surprising degree. Gopher Tortoises are on the Florida State endangered species list and on the Federal Endangered Species list for parts of the State of Georgia. They are on both lists due to habitat loss and over predation by their natural Predators. Gopherus Polyphemus prefers to live in scrub, dry hammock, pine flatwoods, dry prairie, coastal grasslands and dunes, mixed hardwood-pine habitats. Gopher tortoises have lived up to 80 years in the wild and more than 100 years in captivity. Gopher tortoises commonly eat grasses, mushrooms, saw palmetto berries, and prickly pear cactus pads, fruits and flowers, as well as blackberries, blueberries, gopher apples and other low-growing fruits.
